Analysis: Richardson, the 13th overall pick in April's draft on a selection acquired when New York traded star cornerback Darrelle Revis to Tampa Bay, won a close race over Buffalo linebacker Kiko Alonso. Richardson received 23 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league. Alonso, a second-round choice (46th overall), got 19 in balloting announced Saturday night. Often double-teamed as the season wore on, Richardson made 42 tackles and had 3.5 sacks. He clogged the running lanes so effectively that the Jets ranked third against the run this season. He is the fourth Jet to win the award, joining Jonathan Vilma, Hugh Douglas and Erik McMillan.

Analysis: Richardson was a first-round draft pick two weeks ago - unlike Smith, who was a second-rounder. But the big defensive lineman out of Missouri wasn't even the Jets' first pick. That was cornerback Dee Milliner, who was taken No. 9 overall - four spots ahead of Richardson. Rex Ryan certainly likes what he has seen from Richardson, saying he has "popped out" on the field. Good start for the 6-foot-3, 295-pound lineman who stunningly once returned kicks in high school.

Analysis: The Jets and Rex Ryan loaded up on defense in the first round after also taking Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner with the No. 9 pick. New York acquired the 13th pick from Tampa Bay for cornerback Darrelle Revis on Sunday. Richardson, who's 6-foot-2 and 294 pounds, is an athletic run-stuffing lineman who had 79 tackles last season for Missouri.
